Frank Pierce: He stood up for his principles, justice
BY JOE ROSSITER - FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

Anyone familiar with Frank Pierce isn't the least bit surprised to hear that the Southgate resident would attempt to right an injustice.

Family members said the retired truck driver and World War II Army veteran was a man of principle who taught his nine children the difference between right and wrong.

Mr. Pierce died Wednesday after being robbed at Greektown Casino in Detroit and trying to reclaim his winnings.

Angry that a stranger had grabbed his $240-prize ticket, Mr. Pierce trailed the man outside and pointed him out to a police officer, who arrested the suspect. Mr. Pierce collapsed and was rushed to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he was pronounced dead of a heart attack. He was 91.

"My dad was never one to run from a fight his entire life," said his oldest son, Frank Pierce, a retired Michigan State Police Post Commander. "If he could help or stop a problem, it was his nature to take whatever actions he deemed appropriate to resolve it. He was a jovial man with a great sense of humor, but if somebody crossed him, he would not back down."

Born in Buffalo, N.Y., Mr. Pierce was a professional boxer before serving in the Army as a military policeman in charge of handling prisoners of war.

After the war, he was employed as a truck driver with Kroger prior to working with Bender & Louden in Detroit as a truck driver for 35 years. He retired in 1985.

He survived colon and liver cancer, and he played in senior softball and bowling leagues well into his 80s.

An outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed hunting and fishing, Mr. Pierce put both aside to care for his wife of 65 years, Beatrice Pierce, whose health began to fail in later years. "Every single day for three years straight, he would go to sit with her in the nursing home," said Frank Pierce. "He would have dinner with her each evening and stay until the lights went out. He said he didn't want to leave her because she would cry if he did."

Beatrice Pierce died in 2006.

Besides his son, Mr. Pierce's survivors include another son, Stephen Pierce; daughters Nancy Calder, Ruth Rose, Susan Jackson and Tammy Contino; two brothers; a sister; 26 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Three of his children are deceased.

Hello MI PGR

This is now a confirmed SPECIAL EVENT. (Previous info was posted and remains under "General Clatter" - Jim Priestep LTBF Memorial.

Click here to see this link: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4499

The mission date is set! It will take place on June 5th.
The following times are fairly firm but please tune back in for verification.
At 12 Noon we will first visit the LTBF Memorial of Cpl Joe Micks which is located in the Memorial Park in Rapid River. Joe's parents, Ken & Amy plan to meet us there. Thanks to Ann Roman and Nancy Gage for all they have done and continue to do in maintaining Joe's Memorial.
Then we will ride to Foster City for the visit to Sgt. Jim Priestap's grave and LTBF Memorial. Jim's family also plans to
meet us there,
We will welcome everyone for the ride that can make it to Rapid River. We will likely be meeting up with a PGR delegation from the Iron Mountain/Kingsford area in Foster City arriving at about 1 to 1:30 PM Eastern, (Noon to 12:30 PM Central Time.) Note: We have moved the arrival in Foster City up just a bit. We are hoping a "Meet & Greet" will follow and are working on that plan now. At this time we plan the meet & greet to take place at Solbergs in Felch. Hoping to see a good delegation of Trolls to the beautiful U.P. (All Yooper PGR members invited as well!)
This will be a very emotional day for LEO Paul Morningstar. I am so grateful to First Sarge for making this trip for Paul possible. I am also grateful for the service of Kurt Peronto, 'Nam vet, who oversees the maintenance of Jim's Memorial who will be there for Paul.

Annual motorcycle run hosted by the Trenton Firefighters and Police.

On July 21, 2000 the Trenton Fire Department suffered a tragic loss when Firefighter Andy Ross was killed in a motorcycle accident. Wanting to keep Andy's memory alive and to help other needy people on his behalf, the idea came about to have a charity motorcycle run. With the help and support of many people, the Trenton Fire Fighter's Charities have been able to host an annual motorcycle ride ever since.

The ride begins at Elizabeth Park in Trenton, a perfect setting on the Detroit River to showcase the nearly 1000 motorcycles that show up to have a good time and support a good cause. From there, the POLICE escorted bikes typically travel 45 miles out to the Milan Dragway for snacks and refreshments and a halfway stop. A different route is taken on the way back that takes the riders through several of the beautiful Metroparks. This was the first motorcycle ride ever allowed to go through the Parks and from the comments of the riders, they look forward to this ride each year. Arriving back at the park, the riders are treated to an excellent cookout with plenty of food, drink, and live music.

Prior to the ride please join the staff and other riders at Buster's Place Bar & Grill (5784 West Jefferson Avenue
Trenton, MI 48183, (734) 676-4292) for a free continental breakfast (located at W. Jefferson & Vreeland Rd.) Afterwards, the riders gather for an after party at Buster's Bar in Trenton to reconnect and enjoy more great company and live music.

"U.S. Marine Cpl. Jeffrey Standfest.. will be awarded the Purple Heart posthumously ...
Standfest previously was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the NATO Medal.
Standfest, who was single, enlisted in the Marine Corps on Oct. 27, 2008. He was assigned to the 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force at the Combat Center. This was his first deployment.
Clinton Township police officers who knew him described him as an energetic, respectful young man.
Standfest, who formerly resided with his parents and sister in Sterling Heights, graduated in 2005 from St. Clair High School where he was on the track team. He was one of the Blue Water Area’s most dominant cross country runners, winning 12 of his 14 races as a senior and was named the Times Herald newspaper’s Runner of the Year. ... the Standfest family is asking for privacy as they deal with the loss of their son and brother."
